Updates

Hmm. . . I have several blogs I’ve written hanging out without an update so here it goes.

Baby Chase! He’s due on the 21st and is weighing in at about 6 1/2 pounds at the last sonogram. He should gain about a half pound a week till the due date so that will push him to around 8lbs at birth. Everything is looking good!

Civ IV – Very cool game. . . I’ve enjoyed playing it, of course now that time is over! . . .

AT&T Res DSL order? Did I get my refund from the “nice lady” NO. . . I recieved a $4.64 cent check from AT&T so I’ve had to wait a month to get my money back from a company that promised they could deliver a service but couldn’t and took my money upfront immediately and I’ve had to wait nearly 3 weeks to get anything back and then it was only 1/10th of what I paid.

But I have a written promise from AT&T to resolve this issue and pay the remaining $46.46. I’m not holding my breath. But I already wrote my congressman and the Texas Attorney General.

So that’s the latest. . .

Of course our nursery still isn’t completed . . .ugh. . what a major series of unfortunate events.
1. Planned to paint at Christmas (Delayed, no urgency)
2. Planned to paint in Jan (Unexpected Houseguest for a month)
3. Planned to paint in Feb ( 3 times our water went out on the w/e we planned to paint)
4. Planned to paint in Mar (whew hoo . . . its done and it looks really nice!)
5. Planned to put up chair rail in Mar ( Changed mind decided Wall Border would be Easier)
6. Purchased Wall Border (Baby Martex In Flight is Defective, numerous bad reviews on Amazon, border does the same lousy thing for us. . . now the nursery looks bad. . . )
7. Rethinking which Wall Border to put up. Gonna request a refund from Babies R Us today.

I never imagined having to examine and read reviews on Wall border, I really thought it was stupid proof. We completed our entire kitchen which is about 65 foot with 7 corners in about 2 to 3 hours. So far I’ve spent 10 on the nursery which has 4 corners and is a whole whopping 45ft and it looks horrible.

So there we are. . . I’m gonna let all that go and I feel better after venting. . .I guess the rule is check out everything even supposedly stupid proof items like Wall Border.

Battle Cry

BattleCry

Hey that’s pretty cool stuff . . .

“Earlier this week, the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution condemning the “act of provocation” by what it termed an “anti-gay,” “anti-choice” organization that aimed to “negatively influence the politics of America’s most tolerant and progressive city.”

If the San Francisco Council condemned them, then I probably support them. . .

Broadband Connectivity

DSL
Being 2 miles from a Central Office doesn’t help when the phone line runs more than 3 miles before it comes to your house.

Ugh. . . I’ve been hunting for an affordable Broadband solution for about 3 years for where we moved in the Texas Hill Country. Although we are literally 5 miles from Austin City Limits as the crow flies, Broadband other than sattelite has only been available for 18 months. That is from the Cable Company at a full $42 dollars a month. Now that’s not bad, but it makes me kinda sick to see all the Phone company ads for a $13 internet when I can’t get it. But over the last few months I’ve been gettting some flyers in the mail regarding DSL access. I’ve been interested but doubted that the marketers knew what they were talking about. But hey I keep up at DSL Reports and map out the Central Office, which has to be within about 3 miles of a residence to provide Broadband service. And lo and behold a new one appeared a couple months ago. Wow, you know as the crow flies that has got be less than 2 miles from my house. . . I even mapped it out and did an approximate overlay. Wow Really close. . .

So I call up SBC oops I mean AT&T Ma Bell reconstituted and check to see what is available. The first few times I did this in December and at a store in January they said Nope no dice not quite there yet. . . But with the new CO and the mailers, I thought ahh maybe. . . so I put in for a manual loop check cause the first person I talked to said my address was closest to a Central Office in Dripping Springs, TX. Now I know that’s not my CO my local phone wouldn’t start with that pre-fix if I had one. So off to manual check. I give my life information, . . . name, address, mobile number so they can contact and they want a home phone. I’m like nope don’t have one. . . but I’ll sign up if DSL is available.

I wait a few days and get back a few conflicting reports some are like I’m not sure and one person says yep, DSL is most likely available, but I’ll have to order my phone line to be sure. . . Hmm. . . Well seeing as I can see the CO is less than a couple miles from my house now, I think now finally someone who makes sense!

Now my beautiful bride rolls her eyes when I tell her this information and says “They Lie” But I convince her I’ve opened a trouble ticket I’ve got the number and so and so said it was a go! . . .
She just rolled her eyes again. . .

But I’m convinced and push foward. . . I order the line Thursday a week ago and push ahead with the DSL order. Within a few minutes I have email confirmations on the phone line and a cryptic unable to verify account information error on the DSL order. Well, I’m not giving up now so I give AT&T a call to verify. They let me know they think DSL is for sure available at least better than 50/50 ha ha and I need to wait till the line comes active scheduled for last Tuesday. So I wait, I’m assured by so and so that I’ll recieve a callback as soon as they know something so I wait. Tuesday morning and afternoon come and go, my phone line activated Mon, I had a nice guy Mike with SBC local who called and it worked like a champ, but no call from the DSL lady. . . Okay so I give them a ring. . . through the voice prompts I go where I end up back in DSL sales. . . “Oh your account is on hold!” ? Huh Two service reps have requested a manual loop check and they lock the account till that is clear. I show so and so (original contact) has scheduled a follow-up tommorow. . . So I say okay and I wait.

Wed morning comes and goes, Wed afternoon comes and goes, no call from AT&T. . . okay so I call them back. Whew whew round and round I go where I stop nobody knows back to DSL sales.

“Your account has been set at a status red and didn’t you recieve the letter?” Says the nice but evidently very poorly aquainted with the US Postal service. I ask when did they send the letter? Oh. . . that was yesterday, she says seemingly understading her earlier misstatement. . .
Okay I say, is their any possiblity that the manual check will come back that DSL was available?

Not very likely she says. . . so that’s a wrap, less than 2 miles from the CO as the crow flies but no DSL for me not at $13 not a $17 not a $39 dollars! nada nothing zilch. . .

Ugh. . . So I ask to speak with someone who can cancel my brand new local line that I ordered since I was told DSL was available. . . and back transfer land whew whew off to local billing where I explain the situtation and ask to cancel. After 5 minutes of rebuttals and trying to get me to keep the local service that I only ordered because I was told I would have DSL I finally get a disconnect order. Now I ask, I made a pre-payment? How will that be refunded, and will my complete installation charge be refunded? hmm that was too long of a pause. Now I had asked this question multiple times before ordering, I was assured each and every time that this would be the case all charges would be refunded, if DSL wasn’t available after all.

“But your line was installed” she litterally stammers. . . I politiely explain that I only ordered the line since I was told DSL was available, and since DSL wasn’t available I would need to have all charges refunded. “Who can help me with that?” I asked. . .”Okay I’ll transfer you to the DSL billing department she says.” Whew whew red flags go up and I stop that with a firm but polite. “Wait a minute, are you saying that the DSL billing department is going to be able to help me with a charge that I recived from your department for my local phone installation?” She admits, “Well they probably can’t do anything for you.” Okay I say “Who can you connect me with that can help me with my problem?” I’m still pretty cheery, since I know if I’m rude or obstinate, it won’t get me anywhere but dead air and a tired low paying local billing CSR will probably not even be reprimanded, since it’s hard to even catch their names. Off to a “Billing Specialist” Ahh. . . finally this person seems to emphathize with my plight of round about order for DSL being told it was available and then finding out it wasn’t, she knows how to work the SBC billing system. “Okay let me cancel that first disconnect” Huh? Yep that’s what she did and she reset the disconnect date to the initial date of installation or in SBC lingo ASI date. That was last Tuesday although they were fast and it came up on Mon, Evidently since ASI and Disconnect are on the same date that will cancel all billed charges and issue a full credit of my pre-payment back to me via check. This CSR was really helpful and gave me the new disconnect order number. Very nice, I’m holding onto that and her name so I can watch to make sure that happens. . .but I think I’m happy. . .

But not about not having broadband.

Why is a Domain Name Monopoly a Good Idea?

Go Daddy opposes ICANN-VeriSign agreement

Yesterday, February 28, ICANN announced that its Board of Directors met and approved the pending deal with VeriSign for the .COM registry. The agreement will let VeriSign raise registration fees by 7% annually in four of the next six years. It will also give VeriSign control of the .COM registry indefinitely, as it extends VeriSign’s “presumptive renewal” right when this agreement ends in 2012.

The deal was approved by a majority vote, with nine voting in favor and five voting against. One director abstained. Vinton Cerf, who is the Chairman of ICANN and also now an employee of Google®, voted in favor of the give-away.

Following the vote, Credit Suisse increased the price target on VeriSign stock. Their analyst describes the .COM registry as VeriSign’s highest margin business (before any price increases). He goes on to say that the compounding effect of just the price increases could represent a net present value of $4 to $5 per share for VeriSign, or 1 to 1.25 billion dollars. The price increases will start in 2007.

Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons is voicing strong disapproval of this agreement. “The agreement is a bad deal for our customers and the Internet community as a whole,” said Parsons.

“The fact that this deal was approved is a loud signal that major changes are needed at ICANN. If we don’t step up and overhaul ICANN, and leave the Internet largely under the control of this incredibly inept organization, this will go a long way in providing the United Nations with the ammunition it needs to start taking control of the Internet – that must never happen.”

From here, before the deal becomes final, the U.S. Department of Commerce will still need to approve it. If you are disappointed with this recent decision, consider writing a letter to your Senator and Congressperson. You can find the email address of your representatives at the following two Websites:
For the Senate:
www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm
For the House:
www.house.gov/writerep/
For more information about the agreement, please visit Bob Parsons’ blog – Hot Points! – at www.BobParsons.com.

Yeah what Bob says. . .

Cliff’s
ICANN handles who gets control of the TLD (Top Level Domains) for the Internet, Verisign has had .com and .net since inception. ICANN doesn’t generate money to fight Verisign in court, Verisign sued ICANN over a shutdown of auto fowarding that Verisign implemented that caused a large scale backlash in the Internet community. Verisign sued ICANN, this agreement dismisses the lawsuit and gives Verisign a couple billion dollars over the next 6 years and auto renewal.

Basically lock in your domain names long term now cause they are about to go up!

How not to sell a $40 dollar game in 6 easy steps. . .

So I did something I haven’t done in a while yesterday. I bought a PC Video Game. . .

Not just any game either a Game of the Year, well last year but still a pretty heralded event.

Civilization IV.

So I started watching the sale ads first of Jan, and within a week or so Circuit had it on sale for $40 bucks about $10 off full price. . . Great, but I wasn’t quite read to buy. . . But this week Best Buy puts it on sale and I decide okay now its time, and since Circuit Cityhas a 110% price match guarantee, I can get it for $39 dollars instead of $40. So I decide to check online for availability. Hmm something is up with that its only a couple weeks after their $39.99 sale and online indicates that their are no copies available in the stores?

What is up with that? So I decide to call. Okay great I’ve got the automated PBX. . . press blah for this and blah for the other so I follow the prompts, wait then it begins to connect me. . . hmm there is a problem “There is no one available in that department” But instead of offering me the obvious options 1. Hold On 2. Call Back 3. Go to an Operator I get dumped back to the main menu. . .Hmm . . Strike 1 – So I go through the prompts but this time Choose 0 for Operator. Okay great I think, the person answers in just a few moments and seems polite. I tell her the same thing I punched into the options. Okay She’ll connect me great. . . But she doesn’t it seems she blind transferred me to a busy extension. Now, I’m thinking okay so she’ll come back on any sec here and tell me their busy and offer all the options the PBX didn’t. . . uhh nope. . . the reconnect jiggle noise comes, and then dial tone. I’ve been disconnected. Okay well I don’t have 3 strikes your out when I’m trying to get availability when I want to buy a product after all their are about 2 dozen retailers that stock this title so this is Strike 3 onto the next retailer.

CompUSA – Now I was trying to buy this on Tuesday, so we were planning to head over thier after looking at some furniture. . . It so happens we liked the furniture and bought it so we ended up back at Comp a little late 9:15 or so by my watch. Ugh. . .They are closed according to the sign. I thought they were open till 10:00pm but nope, So I go up to the door and its open. I enter thinking maybe I was right after all, but after tracking down an employee, I’m ushered out of the store, “We’re closed” So okay not a travesty and not a strike, my wife heads over after work to check out Comp, but she can’t find the game. . . So she calls me. I check online and sure enough they show to have it instock at that CompUSA so she’s off to ask for help. Hmm. . .Bad news the employee tells here their has been a spate of bad disks and returns so their store has pulled all the copies off the shelf and is waiting for replacements from Firaxis/Take2 (Game Developer and Publisher) Okay, so they are knowledgeable and pro-active. But I really want the game so off to Retailer #3
(No Strikes – Points for making a Customer Centric Business Decision) I’ll be back to Comp for other items I need.

Best Buy.
Well we really dislike Best Buy and haven’t bought anything there in 6 years, but my wife reluctantly agrees cause she wants to make me happy. She’s called and told me about the defective disks and I at first am sceptical. But after reviewing Firaxis and the Civ4 site and forums I find that this month there are quite a few complaints of just this problem, and several indicating a frustration that after multiple returns the Retailers refused to give them their money back.

So now we are looking to be careful, I advise my wife to see if they have the DVD version, no one is complaining too much about it and posts regarding it are 5 to 1 all about the 2 disk CD version, so I’m hopeful this can all be avoided. Ugh. . . no luck, no DVD version in sight. My wife picks up the CD version and asks what I want to do. Well I want the game, but I don’t want a hassle, so I suggest a solution I’ve seen other forum members have success with, have Best Buy install the disk until they find a good set and then buy that copy. I know not typical, but if you can’t return it after you buy it for a refund, better to be safe, I think this is a Win Win – Best Buy makes a sale, if they find bad disks they mitigate the risk of another customer getting pissed off at them and returning it later A, and B, they get all their money back from Firaxis/Take2 by exchanging the product anyway. Oh yeah and C, they break our 6 year boycott and possibly win back another customer.

Hmm. . .evidently Best Buy management didn’t see it that way. Their solution was for us to buy it then they would install it, but only if it didn’t work when we took it home. Not my ideal solution.

Okay this is Strike 81, we already have boycotted Best Buy for 6 years, on the final moment we were going to break the boycott, we don’t even meet halfway on this issue, their decision was all about making Them the Most money possible and totally screwing the customer. After all if I can’t return it for a refund, and I can’t get a working title, their answer to “Take it up with the Manufacturer” doesn’t hold much promise to me. . .

Oh well the Boycott continues . . .(Why you ask, that’s a story for another day:)

Onto Target. . .
Okay so we are biased for Target it is our Favorite General Purpose/Retail Store It tops Wallyworld for cleanliness and store helpfullness, we are concerned by their corporate decision to send away the Salvation Army, but the personell have always been friendly, they have pretty good prices and generally good stock Plus their clearance items can’t be beat.

So I find the game and head over to Customer Care to see if they can price match it for me.
Hmm. . . no luck, Target doesn’t price match, you know I didn’t know that. They talk all about adjusting their prices within 30 days, but the catch is its just to themselves, not to their competitors, oh well not a big deal, we still bought $70 worth of stuff since we found a nice Kitchen Counter on Clearance for 50% off the $100 retail price. . . whew hoo. . .

Of course they would have made another $40 if they did price match.

Half a Strike . . . 😉
We still like Target.

Onto Wally World (Walmart) They have the best price matching policy in the industry and one of the better return policies, so you know people can complain all they want, but fairly low prices, (Not always the lowest despite the ad), good return policy, excellent selection generally make it a hard place to beat, despite the fact their customer care and sales force could use a good scrubbing most of the time. I’ve always found their staff to be very variable, some stores have great friendly helpful staff and some stores generally don’t or only have 1 or 2 helpful people, but I guess its just like that. But definitely not like Target where I’ve never had a rude or unhelpful person there.

So finally after 5 different retailers I purchase the game, This Walmart has 5 copies, their are 5 Walmarts within 25 miles of me. I figure I’ll find one that works, and Walmart will take back every copy that doesn’t so that’s okay.

Price Match was really easy too, we told the cashier about it before we checked out, she did everything else first, then checked the competitor ad, Best Buy and walla instant discount at the register, no customer care no nothing. . .

🙂 Excellent!

So now I have it, does it install, did I get the famous bad disks? I don’t know I haven’t installed it yet.

But I will

And I’ll let ya’ll know what I think.

Questions for a New Year
Printable version of Questions for a New Year
Written by Don Whitney

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) — Once, when the people of God had become careless in their relationship with Him, the Lord rebuked them through the prophet Haggai. “Consider your ways!” (Haggai 1:5) he declared, urging them to reflect on some of the things happening to them and to evaluate their slipshod spirituality in light of what God had told them.

Even those most faithful to God occasionally need to pause and think about the direction of their lives. It’s so easy to bump along from one busy week to another without ever stopping to ponder where we’re going and where we should be going.

The beginning of a new year is an ideal time to stop, look up and get our bearings. For starters, here are 10 questions to ask prayerfully in the presence of God:

1.
What’s one thing you could do this year to increase your enjoyment of God?
2.
What’s the most humanly impossible thing you will ask God to do this year?
3.
What’s the single most important thing you could do to improve the quality of your family life this year?
4.
In which spiritual discipline do you most want to make progress this year, and what will you do about it?
5.
What is the single biggest time-waster in your life, and what will you do about it this year?
6.
What is the most helpful new way you could strengthen your church?
7.
For whose salvation will you pray most fervently this year?
8.
What’s the most important way you will, by God’s grace, try to make this year different from last year?
9.
What one thing could you do to improve your prayer life this year?
10.
What single thing that you plan to do this year will matter most in 10 years? In eternity?

In addition to these questions, here are 21 more to help you “Consider your ways.” Think on the entire list at one sitting, or answer one question each day for a month.

11.
What’s the most important decision you need to make this year?
12.
What area of your life most needs simplifying, and what’s one way you could simplify in that area?
13.
What’s the most important need you feel burdened to meet this year?
14.
What habit would you most like to establish this year?
15.
Who do you most want to encourage this year?
16.
What is your most important financial goal this year, and what is the most important step you can take toward achieving it?
17.
What’s the single most important thing you could do to improve the quality of your work life this year?
18.
What’s one new way you could be a blessing to your pastor (or to another who ministers to you) this year?
19.
What’s one thing you could do this year to enrich the spiritual legacy you will leave to your children and grandchildren?
20.
What book, in addition to the Bible, do you most want to read this year?
21.
What one thing do you most regret about last year, and what will you do about it this year?
22.
What single blessing from God do you want to seek most earnestly this year?
23.
In what area of your life do you most need growth, and what will you do about it this year?
24.
What’s the most important trip you want to take this year?
25.
What skill do you most want to learn or improve this year?
26.
To what need or ministry will you try to give an unprecedented amount this year?
27.
What’s the single most important thing you could do to improve the quality of your commute this year?
28.
What one biblical doctrine do you most want to understand better this year, and what will you do about it?
29.
If those who know you best gave you one piece of advice, what would they say? Would they be right? What will you do about it?
30.
What’s the most important new item you want to buy this year?
31.
In what area of your life do you most need change, and what will you do about it this year?

The value of many of these questions is not in their profundity, but in the simple fact that they bring an issue or commitment into focus. For example, just by articulating which person you most want to encourage this year, you will be more likely to remember to encourage that person than if you hadn’t considered the question.

If you’ve found these questions helpful, you might want to put them someplace – in a day planner, PDA, calendar, bulletin board, etc. – where you can review them more frequently than once a year.

So let’s evaluate our lives, make plans and goals, and live this new year with biblical diligence, remembering that, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage” (Proverbs 21:5). But in all things let’s also remember our dependence on our King who said, “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).
